Anthony Amos

Born in Bristol, Anthony grew up amongst the docks and went to sea at the age of 16. He spent his early career working on trawlers, tugs and cargo ships in the Merchant Navy and also helped to restore Brunel's SS Great Britain in Bristol. He took up painting later in life and moved to Devon in the 1990's to paint full time where for the next twenty years he created a substantial body of work, much of which reflects his experiences at sea and the people who made their living from it. His paintings evoke memories and passions of a bygone era....

He used a simple palette, latterly employing his bare hands and rags instead of brushes to create raw, powerful images combining strength and energy with movement and sensitivity.

“Tony was able to paint on a grand scale: vast brooding sky and seascapes capturing the restlessness of wind and wave often with his beloved seafarers hard at work, protecting their kin and their livelihoods; enormous rusting hulks in dry dock their work perhaps done, serene in their decline; or horses, taking the strain when the task was beyond the strength of men.” (from Peter Winfield, Anthony Amos Paintings I)

He exhibited throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland and was honoured by the Royal Society of Marine Artists.
